Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI)

The Nuffield Early Language Intervention (NELI) is a programme used in schools to help young children aged 4 to 6 who may need extra support with talking, understanding and listening.

Strong language skills are important for learning, making friends, and building confidence. NELI is designed to give children the help they need at an early stage - especially if they are finding it hard to express themselves or follow what others are saying.

Helping children with language and communication early gives them the confidence to enjoy school, join in with learning, and build strong friendships. NELI is one of the ways Croydon schools help make sure every child gets the best start.

Who is NELI for?

NELI is for children:

  • In Reception (age 4-5) or Year 1 (age 5-6).
  • Who may have difficulties with spoken language or understanding instructions.
  • Who do not have a diagnosed condition but may need extra help to catch up.

The programme is especially helpful for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) - even if they don’t have an official diagnosis of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

What does the NELI programme involve?

NELI is delivered by trained staff in your child’s school and includes:

  • Fun, small group sessions and one-to-one activities.
  • A focus on listening, learning new words, speaking in sentences, and understanding stories.
  • Regular sessions over several weeks, during school hours.
  • Support that is tailored to your child’s needs and progress.

It is based on research from speech and language experts and has been proven to make a real difference in children’s communication and confidence.

How are families involved?

If your child is chosen to take part in NELI:

  • The school will talk to you before starting.
  • You’ll receive updates on how your child is getting on.
  • Staff may share simple games and tips to support language development at home.

Working together with school staff can help your child make the best possible progress.

How can my child access NELI?

NELI is run in many primary schools across Croydon. Your child’s teacher or SENCo will identify if NELI might help. No formal diagnosis is needed, but the school will check your child’s language skills before starting.

If you’re concerned about your child’s speech or understanding, talk to their class teacher or SENCo.
