WellComm Early Years: A Simple Way to Check and Support Young Children’s Speech and Language Develop

WellComm Early Years is a tool used by nurseries, childminders, and early years professionals to understand how well a child is developing their communication and language skills - from as early as 6 months up to 6 years old

It helps to identify children who may need extra help with talking, listening, or understanding - and puts support in place quickly, often without needing a formal diagnosis.

The earlier we spot and support speech and language needs, the better the outcome for your child. WellComm helps children build strong communication skills early - so they’re ready for school, friendships, and learning.

What does WelLComm do?

WellComm helps staff to:

  • Spot any early signs that a child may be struggling with speech or language.
  • Plan simple, fun activities to support language and communication.
  • Track your child’s progress over time.
  • Work closely with you as a parent or carer to build on your child’s strengths.
  • Refer your child to other professionals (like Speech and Language Therapy) if needed.

It is designed to be gentle, play-based and child-friendly, making it easy to include in everyday activities.

Who is it for?

WellComm is for all children aged 6 months to 6 years, including those who:

  • May not be talking yet or are late to speak.
  • Find it difficult to understand what others say.
  • Have trouble joining in, listening or paying attention.
  • May already have a special educational need or disability (SEND), or are being monitored for possible additional needs.

You do not need a diagnosis for your child to benefit from WellComm.

Who uses it and how?

WellComm is usually used by:

  • Early years staff in nurseries, pre-schools or with childminders
  • Reception teachers and school staff for children up to age 6
  • Health visitors or Early Years SEND professionals

It involves a mix of observation, fun tasks, and questions - all done in a friendly and supportive way that helps your child feel at ease.

How are parent involved?

You’ll be kept fully informed and included in any decisions. Staff will:

  • Talk to you about how your child is doing
  • Share simple games and tips to support speech at home
  • Involve you in planning any next steps or referrals

You can also ask your child’s early years setting if WellComm is being used and request a check if you’re concerned.
