The Integrated Review for 2-Year-Olds

The Integrated Review for 2-Year-Olds is an important check that helps you, your child’s early years setting (like a nursery or childminder), and health professionals understand how your child is developing.

In Croydon, this review takes place when your child is around 2 to 2½ years old and combines two key checks:

  1. Your child’s health and development review (led by a health visitor).
  2. Your child’s early learning progress check (carried out by their nursery or childminder).

By bringing these checks together, we can get a more complete picture of your child’s needs and make sure you have the right support early on - especially if your child has special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), or if there are any concerns about their development.

Why is the review important?

The Integrated Review helps to:

  • Spot any early signs of developmental delay or SEND
  • Support your child’s communication, learning, and wellbeing
  • Give you practical advice and guidance as a parent or carer
  • Make sure any extra help is offered as early as possible
  • Plan for the next steps in your child’s learning and care

It is also a great chance for you to ask questions, share your observations, and raise any concerns you might have.

What areas does the review cover?

The review looks at how your child is doing in areas such as:

  • Talking, listening and understanding
  • Movement and physical coordination
  • Playing and exploring
  • Relationships and emotions
  • Eating, sleeping, and general health

If needed, the team may offer advice or refer you to other services like speech and language therapy, Portage, or the Early Years SEND Team.

Who will carry out the review?

The review is usually led by your child’s health visitor and their key person at nursery, pre-school, or with a registered childminder. They will work together with you to share information and ensure everyone is on the same page.

What happens after the review?

After the review:

  • You’ll receive a summary of your child’s development.
  • Any support needs will be discussed with you.
  • If further help is needed, referrals can be made quickly.
  • You’ll be given advice on how to support your child at home.

The aim is to give you the tools and support to help your child get the best possible start.
