What is Travel Assistance?

Travel Assistance is support provided by Croydon Council to help children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND) travel to and from school, nursery, or college.

If your child finds it difficult to get to school safely or independently because of their needs, the council may be able to help.

What support is available?

Croydon Council may offer:

  • A minibus, taxi or other specialist vehicle, sometimes with an escort.
  • A personal travel budget to organise your own travel arrangements.
  • A free travel pass for public transport.
  • Independent travel training or a travel buddy to help your child build confidence.

The goal is to support safe, reliable, and where possible, independent travel for your child.

Who can apply?

Your child may be eligible for support if they:

  • Have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
  • Have physical, medical, sensory, or learning difficulties.
  • Attend the nearest suitable school that can meet their needs.
  • Live beyond the statutory walking distance (2 miles for under 8s, 3 miles for over 8s).
  • Are unable to travel safely on their own, even if under the walking distance.

Each application is considered individually, based on your child’s needs and family circumstances.

How do I apply?

To apply for travel assistance in Croydon:

  • Visit the website - Croydon School Travel Assistance.
  • Complete the online application form.
  • Include details of your child’s needs, school placement, and any supporting information (EHCP, medical reports, etc.).

If your child already receives support, you'll need to re-apply each academic year or when there’s a change in their circumstances.
