Financial Help for Students with SEND at University

Going to university is exciting, but it can also bring new costs like course materials, travel, or support you might need. The good news is that there is financial help available to make sure that young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can access and enjoy university life.

This section will help you understand what support is out there and how to get it.

Student Finance

Most students in the UK can apply for Student Finance to help pay for:

  • Tuition fees (what your course costs)
  • Maintenance loan (to help with living costs like rent, food and travel)

You apply through Student Finance England, and they will tell you what you’re eligible for.

Support at University

Every university has an access support team. They can help you:

  • Apply for funding like DSA.
  • Understand what support is available on campus.
  • Make sure the right help is in place before you start your course.

What you will need to Apply

  • Evidence of your disability or condition (such as a doctor’s letter or assessment report).
  • Your Student Finance application (for tuition and maintenance loans).
  • A completed DSA form if applying for additional support.

If you live in Croydon and have SEND, there is plenty of advice available to guide you through your options

Getting financial help doesn’t have to be stressful and you don’t have to do it alone. Your school, college, local SEND services, or a trusted adult can help you take the next steps.
