What is a Supported Internship?

A Supported Internship is a work-based study programme for young people aged 16-24 who:

  • Have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  • Have a learning difficulty and/or disability
  • Want to move into paid employment

Supported Internships help you learn new skills in real jobs with support from:

  • A college tutor (for one day a week or less)
  • A job coach (who helps you and your employer at work)

You do most of your learning in the workplace, not the classroom.

The internship usually runs from September to June.

What does a Supported Internship include?

  • Real work placements (not paid jobs).
  • Up to 3 different job placements.
  • Support from a job coach at work.
  • Help with job applications afterwards.
  • Training in things like teamwork, communication and timekeeping.
  • A chance to build confidence and independence.

Who can apply?

You can apply if:

  • You are aged 16–24.
  • You have an EHCP.
  • You want to get a paid job in the future.

What happens after I apply?

  • You’ll meet with staff to talk about your interests and skills.
  • You’ll be matched to a work placement.
  • Near the end, you’ll get help applying for paid jobs.
  • Once you're in paid work, your EHCP may come to an end (unless you go on to an apprenticeship).
