Policy Guidance

A policy is a statement of beliefs that is collectively agreed, recommending the action taken by the organisation to help inform procedures. A procedure is the course of action in particular circumstances. Policies and procedures help to underpin workplace decisions and determine practice. Statutory requirements can be met and the ethos of the setting translated for staff and parents as well as setting out a clear understanding of the service that you are providing to ensure consistency. The EYFS Statutory Guidance will dictate the policies and procedures you need to meet your obligations to meet your registration requirements. All policies and procedures should form part of your induction and be shared and discussed with staff to inform and contribute to their practice. When writing a policy it is often easier to work with a draft rather than start from scratch and the following are good places to gather relevant information:

Remember policies should be developed in conjunction with your staff, parents, carers and children to suit the needs and practices of your setting and most importantly be easily understood and reviewed annually. You should aim to make your service accessible to all sections of your community, through open, fair and clearly communicated procedures which create a positive environment where adults consistently encourage children to respect themselves and others in a secure, challenging, stimulating and positive setting with clear boundaries and expectations.
