Helping Children with SEND get the Best Start in Life

The early years (from birth to age 5) are a key time in your child’s development. In Croydon, we want to make sure that every child, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), has the support they need to learn, grow, and feel confident in early years settings like nurseries, childminders, and pre-schools.

Whether you’re looking for childcare, support with your child’s development, or advice about next steps, there is help available for you and your family.

What kind of help can I get?

Croydon offers a range of support for children with SEND in the early years, including:

  • Advice and guidance on choosing childcare or nursery settings that are inclusive.
  • Support from the Early Years SEND Team for children who need extra help.
  • Help with applying for funded childcare places for 2, 3 and 4-year-olds.
  • Specialist early years settings for children with more complex needs.
  • Access to services like Portage (home visiting), speech and language therapy, and other professionals.
  • Support with transitions into school and advice on when to request an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

We work closely with families, nurseries, health professionals, and support services to create the right plan for your child.

How do I know if my child needs extra support?

You may want to ask for support if:

  • Your child is not meeting expected milestones (like walking, talking, or playing).
  • You or their childcare provider have concerns about their learning, behaviour, or communication.
  • Your child already has a diagnosed condition or disability.
  • You’re unsure about what support is available or how to access it.

You don’t need to wait for a diagnosis - support can start as soon as there are concerns.

How can I access support or make a referral?

There are several ways you can get help:

  • Speak to your child’s nursery, childminder or early years setting - they can help you start the process.
  • Talk to your health visitor, GP, or another professional working with your child.
  • Contact the Early Years SEND Team directly if you want to refer yourself or ask questions.
  •  Visit your local children’s centre, where friendly staff can talk through your options and guide you through the next steps.

A referral form may need to be completed through Croydon’s Early Help process.
