Going to University and Higher Education

Many young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) choose to go on to university or other types of higher education - and you can too!

Whether you want to study locally or move away, there are lots of opportunities available both in Croydon and across the country.

Can a University meet my needs?

Yes, they can - and by law, they must do all they reasonably can to support you. This means that universities and colleges must make reasonable adjustments to help students with SEND take part fully in university life.

These might include:

  • Providing course materials in a format that works for you (e.g. large print, digital, audio).
  • Giving you extra time in exams or for coursework.
  • Helping you with study skills, specialist software, or how to use the library.
  • Assigning a support worker to help you stay organised and manage your time.
  • Arranging specialist equipment or assistive technology to support your learning.

These changes help to make sure that you have the same chance to succeed as everyone else.

Every university or college has a disability support team you can contact before you apply. They can answer your questions and help plan any support you’ll need - so it’s a good idea to reach out early.

You might also be able to apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). This is a grant that can help cover the cost of things like support workers, specialist equipment, or travel. It doesn’t need to be paid back.
