Early Intervention and Improvement Service

Every child and young person deserves to feel they belong and to get the help they need, when they need it.That is what our teams are here for.

We support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) across Croydon, from their very first years right through to starting adult life.

Much of our work happens alongside nurseries, schools and specialist provisions, helping them understand each child and find what works for them. Some of our teams also work directly with families and young people.

Our Teams

  • Early Years SEND Team: working with nurseries, preschools and childminders to support children from birth to five years.
  • Portage and Early Development Service: support at home and in the community for young children who aren't in a setting yet, and their families.
  • Early Intervention SEND Team: working with mainstream schools so children can thrive in their local school.
  • Special Schools and ELPs: working with Croydon's special schools and Enhanced Learning Provisions.
  • Supported Internships: helping young people aged 16 to 24 with an EHCP get ready for paid work.

Getting Support

If you are a parent or carer: your child's SENCO at nursery or school is a great first person to talk to. If your child is under five and not in a setting yet, you're welcome to contact our Portage service directly.

If you are a young person: if you're 16 to 24, have an EHCP and are thinking about work, get in touch with our Supported Internships team. Your school or college can help with this too.

If you are a professional: each team's page explains how to refer or ask for support.

We're always happy to talk things through. If you're not sure where to start, get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction.
